El Quim, La Boqueria Market, Barcelona

Time of visit: 21 March 2014

Long before we went to Barcelona I enlisted El Quim as one of eating places I wished to visit. Although it is only a small bar or cafe in the middle of the market with very uncomfortable and limited seats (no reservation accepted), from what I read, this place is very much well known amongst foodies, has been visited by famous chefs and celebrities (Rick Stein is one of them) and probably the most hyped cafe in Barcelona.

We went to El Quim around 3pm (it closes at 5pm and all day Sunday), expecting it would be less people there. But we were wrong. All chairs were occupied, and a lot of people were waiting, moving around to grab empty seats. You have to watch closely who are going to leave, and stand right behind them. Plus, a lot of other people (shoppers) walking around too. Crowded. It is not easy. Three times my Mr indicated "let's go, don't bother" but I firmly said "NO". After about 25 minutes finally we got the seats. Sitting is not very comfortable, the table is narrow, and you have to help them clearing the table -give used plates, glasses etc to the staff in front of you because all the staff are at the counter, no one walking around to clean the long table. When the food you order is ready, the staff will hand it to you above your head, be careful :)

Regardless of the inconveniences -and it is not cheap either- if you are a foodie, passionate about food, or simply has an attitude to experience things, you will not be disappointed. I vow to return to El Quim if I have a chance to go back to Barcelona. Next time I will try their ox tails (someone sitting next to me had them, they looked and smelled so good!) and tripe.
The owner, El Quim, was not there. Usually he is the one cooking. The staff will hand the food to you above your head

You have to watch who are leaving.. then grab the seats quickly before other people get them. What such an experience!

The menu written on the boards, but don't worry.. they have menu in various languages, and some of the staff speak English too.

This is the signature dish: Huevos con Chipirones (Eggs with Baby Calamari). Simple but very very delicious. Divine!!

"Table cloth"

For what you get and the place like that, it is not cheap. The calamari costs 19 euro. Two drinks, calamari, meatballs, patatas bravas and bread, cost 37.70 euro. Oh, they have burger costing 25 euro! Burger with foie gras.
