New Year's Eve Late Lunch
Martin Berasategui is a Basque chef who holds 8 Michelin stars in total, more than any other Spanish chef. He has many restaurants around the world; Mexico, Barcelona and Tenerife are just to name a few. He leads Doma Restaurant, a main venue located in our hotel (Silken Gran Hotel Domine) on the 7th floor where we had breakfast every morning.
There was another venue in the hotel, brasserie type called Le Cafe Metropol, near the lobby. This venue is not under Martin's responsibility. Before and after New Year the brasserie had an offer, a 3-course meal including wine and water for 24 Euro/person. We could hardly believe it because the normal price for ala carte was 18-27 Euro per item! Plus, one of the dishes on the set menu, i.e. Oxtail and beans stew was created by Martin Berasategui. FYI, beans stew is one of local Basque dishes, so I was intrigued.. a local dish created by a reputable chef :)
So yeah.. we had late lunch, it was NY's Eve.
Goodness me.. Everything was absolutely fabulous!! We were shocked when our waitress brought 2 bottles of wine and a (posh) bottle of water. I thought we would be given wine by glass, Wait.. coffee at the end of the meal was included too.
So, with 24 Euro you get a starter, a main, a dessert, a bottle of wine (white, red or rose), water and coffee. Oh, unlimited bread too!!!. Every time your side plate was empty, a staff quickly came to refill with one bread. We had to stop them ha ha ha..
The meal was very impressive. The service was great. Fab fab fab.
I told MOH that if by any chance he gets an offer to work in Bilbao, do not hesitate, accept it. I will move to Bilbao so I can enjoy good good good food in a reasonable price LOL..
Outside, the green giant, is Bilbao's Puppy, a famous landmark of Bilbao located in front of
Gugenheim Museum. The cafe/hotel is right in front of the museum.
We knew wine and water were included in the menu, but we were shocked when a staff
gave us 2 bottles of wine!!! I thought it would be just a glass each. This is one of them.
Initially there was only a small portion of oxtail in the bowl, I thought OMG that's very small.
Then our waitress came and pour the stew.
This understated looking dish is beans and oxtail stew, created by Martin Berasategui. Don't judge
food by its look, it was very very delicious!!!
My starter: Cod fish risoto with crispy fish skin. This one is also superbly delicious.
His main: Fillet steak with wild mushrooms. Melting in the mouth. Fab.
My main: Grilled turbot fish. Nice but not wow-ing.
His dessert: Passion fruit panacota, coconut ice cream.
Nice.
My dessert: Walnut cream, pistachio cake, milk ice cream.
Total with service: 53 Euro. For the similar quality of food, in England we pay more than twice if we order 2 bottles of wine. Wines in restaurants in England never free smile emoticon.
It was good value for money.
